Partly sunny skies greeted the riders in Santa Cruz at the finish line. But it was a 115.9 mile test of grit and endurance to get there.
Two-time Defending Tour of California Champion Levi Leipheimer has shown in the past he's got what it takes to finish on top, and today was no different. The 35-year old Montana native separated himself from the peloton early with a fierce attack up the mountains.
But would relinquish his long lead just 100 yards from the finish line. Check out fellow American Tom Peterson pass him with to win stage 2.
Leipheimer does own the overall leader's yellow jersey... And he said afterwards it was the rough weather that pushed him throughout.
