Romney supports House Republicans against stimulus

February 23, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
Mitt Romney has his own version of an economic stimulus bill: sending $1,000 checks to a group of Republican House members targeted by the Democrats for voting against the president's economic stimulus bill. The former Massachusetts governor and Republican presidential contender said in a statement Monday the congressmen were "courageous" for opposing the measure.

The members receiving checks are Reps. Judy Biggert and Mark Kirk of Illinois; Ken Calvert and Dan Lungren of California; Michael Castle of Delaware; Charlie Dent and Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania; Blaine Luetkemeyer and Thad McCotter of Missouri; Dave Reichert of Washington; and Pete Sessions of Texas.

Romney is paying the checks with money from his Free and Strong America PAC, which he is using to support like-minded politicians.

He recently addressed House Republicans and continues to assess whether to mount a second presidential campaign in 2012.
