Obama Hopeful About Peeling Away Some In Taliban

Washington D.C., USA In an interview with The New York Times, Obama says there may be such opportunities. But he says the situation in Afghanistan is, if anything, more complicated than the challenges the American military has faced in Iraq.

U.S. troops were able to persuade Islamic fundamentalists in Iraq to cooperate in some instances because they had been alienated by the tactics of al-Qaida in terrorists.

Obama cautions that in Afghanistan, there is a less-governed region and a history of fierce independence among tribes, meaning a stiff challenge for the United States.
