Obama Heads to California

March 18, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
President Barack Obama said he wants congress to pass legislation giving the government greater regulatory authority over financial institutions like AIG. He made those statements on the White House lawn as he prepared to make his first official visit to California Wednesday. The president will hold a pair of town hall meetings. One is in Costa Mesa where hundreds of people camped out Monday night to get tickets. It was a slow process. People were let through the gate five at a time. By noon only standby tickets were being given out, and dozens of people who say they waited all night didn't get a chance at the tickets

A White House organizer couldn't even say how many tickets were handed out, or how many seats would be filled by the public. The president visits Pomona Thursday morning. He'll tour the Edison International Vehicle Electrics plant. The tour will be private and closed to the public. Then President Obama will visit a school in Downtown Los Angeles.

The president will also appear on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.
