The violent scene played out at a birthday party for the 5-year-old Saturday night.
Police said the 23-year-old suspect attacked his teenage sister first, and then went after the 5-year-old.
The 9-year-old sister called 9-1-1 and the first police officer arrived within a minute, but not in time to save the little pre-schooler.
As he went after the 9-year-old, officers opened fire and killed him. Investigators said there was no clear motive for the attacks.
