Easter Shooting at a Fresno Park

Fresno, CA It happened just before 3pm at Maroa West Park on Brawley at Clinton on the west side of town.

The Victoria West Park turned into a crime scene Easter Sunday.

"Pretty shocking Easter Sunday?"

"Yeah, it's horrible."

Lucy Rubalcaba had just finished an egg hunt with her family, when suddenly, shots rang out. "I have my family over in this area and I just heard popping. It sounded like firecrackers."

That's when she says chaos erupted, sending parents and their kids for safety. "They ran. They all started running with their kids. Everybody screaming, 'get all the kids down', and I actually got in my car and I went up on the grass area to throw all the kids in the car," said Rubalcaba.

Fresno police said Sunday's shooting started after two groups at the park got into an argument. Multiple shots were fired, hitting an innocent bystander in the torso.

Lt. Greg Coleman with the Fresno Police Department said, "Anytime shots are fired, it's a bad thing. It's dangerous. This person was not the intended target."

The teen victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the suspects ran off. So did several families, who were frightened by what they saw.

"I just got a phone call. They said there was a shooting, and we came up here to get our kids," said one witness.

"I just heard there was a shooting and we just getting up out of here cause I can't have none of that. I don't have time for none of that. So, come on you all, come on," said another man.

Even after the shooting, several families did decide to stay at the park.

Meanwhile, the victim is expected to recover. Police said he was grazed by the bullet and then picked it up off the ground.
