Mother Runs Over Her Children

Mendota, CA The small quiet agricultural community of Mendota was rocked Sunday morning when 2 children, a 5-year old boy and his 3-year old sister, were struck by their mother's white van outside their home.

"I believe the children ran to the vehicle and she didn't see them. They are very small children," said Joseph Riofrio.

Riofrio is a close family friend and Mendota city councilmember.

He showed up after deputies and fire crews declared the boy dead and rushed his sister to Community Regional Medical Center.

"Apparently she hit the gas pedal instead of the break," said Lt. Jay Stuart.

Fresno county detectives are investigating but believe this was purely an accident.

"There doesn't appear to be anything criminal," said Stuart.

Riofrio: "The were all very close and the parents very loving with their children. Just unfathomable that something this terrible could happen."

The 5-year old was going to be a kindergartener next Fall. Neighbors said he was always playing with friends.

Riofrio: "Always excited and happy to be out. Just a bright beautiful boy."

The councilmember said Mendota will step up to help this family. "I think the community is going to come together to help the family get through this the best they can."

At this time investigators said the mother will not be charged with a crime.
