Top Ten Supermarkets

Consumer Reports Consumer Reports is coming out with a different kind of grocery list: ranking the stores themselves. The list is based on feedback from shoppers.

Consumer Reports asked over 32-hundred people about their experiences in supermarkets, supercenters or warehouse clubs over the last year ... They rated cleanliness, service, checkout speed, and quality of products. New-York based /*Wegmans*/ and nationwide chain /*Trader Joe's*/ made the top of the list, but no one store had everything.

Tod Marks with /*Consumer Reports*/ said, "The perfect grocery store really doesn't exist. If you want quality perishables, meat, baked goods, produce and you want low prices, it's really hard to find that all in one store."

Another top chain included Costco. Although Costco scored high for shopping satisfaction ... the warehouse store carries a limited assortment of mostly bulk items, and charges $40 to $50 per year to shop.

/*Raleys*/, /*Win-Co*/ and /*Whole Foods*/ also did well. But Whole Foods was seen as more expensive than other stores with a national presence.

The largest number of those surveyed shopped at Wal-Mart, which is the nation's biggest grocer, but the low-price leader got low marks for service and perishables.
