Merced Graduation will cost $700,000 Dollars

Fresno, CA What started as a small graduation ceremony for U.C. Merced has mushroomed into a $700,000 dollar event. School officials are busy preparing for First Lady Michelle Obama's commencement speech on May 16th.

But they're still looking for sponsors to help cover the increased cost due to the first lady's participation. The biggest expense is an estimated $300,000 dollars for a live feed to jumbo-trons that will broadcast the speech to "spillover" guest's downtown.

The campus can accommodate 12,500 people, but at least 25,000 are expected.

The state's newest university has 500 graduates who wrote letters, urging the first lady to come to Merced.
