Justice Souter stepping down in June

Fresno, CA Supreme Court Justice David Souter will step down at the end of the Court's term in June.

Souter notified the White House that he's retiring; the vacancy gives the President an early opportunity to put his stamp on the highest court in the land.

Today, President Obama described the characteristics he's looking for in the next justice, "I will seek someone with a sharp and excellent mind. I will seek someone who believes that law isn't just theory and case law but someone who understands the daily realities of people's lives."

Many political watchers say that since justice Ruth Ginsberg is the only female on the court, the President's pick is likely to be a woman, rumored to be near the top of the list, White House solicitor.
