Car drives into Ponding Basin

Fresno, CA It happened Saturday morning, on Cedar just south of Herndon.

And just minutes later, there were very few signs of any accident at the scene, other than skid marks on the curb, and a few air bubbles in the water, where the car ended up.

Witnesses said they heard screeching tires, before watching the car go under a fence and into the water.

Jeff purgason, witness said, "We just saw the car fishtail, one, two… the third time it came right through the fence, and underneath the fence. It went through the fence so fast, like a hot knife through butter, you know? It hit the water really hard, really fast. I was just kind of surprised, I looked up and I saw a little head bob up.

The young woman was able to get out of the vehicle and swim to safety. A diver was called to get the vehicle out of the water. Police said it appears the accident was caused by a combination of mechanical failure and driver error.
