5 children injured when car crashes into preschool

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) The car was driven by the mother of one of the children enrolled at the school.

The crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. at Childtime Preschool on Yorktown Avenue. There were 14 children inside at the time, Huntington Beach fire department spokeswoman Martha Werth said.

The mother was at the wheel of the car when the vehicle jumped the sidewalk and crashed through a doorway, Werth said. Her child was still in the car.

Five children under the age of 5 were transported to hospitals: two with serious injuries and three with minor injuries, Huntington Beach police Lt. Russell Reinhart said. No adults were injured.

The motorist had not been charged. It was unknown why the car drove into the building.

"The cause is still under investigation," Reinhart said.
