Merced K9 gets Special Vest

A dog that's trained to protect others is now getting some protection of his own. A Merced police K9, named Rex, is now sporting a special puncture resistant vest that can stop knives and most bullets. The vest was donated by international armor corporation out of San Clemente, and is the first one of its kind for the department.

Rex's handler said the two and a half year old Czechoslovakian German Shepherd deserves the extra protection because he often faces dangerous situations to help keep the public safe.

Officer Brian Rinder, Merced Police Department, said, "We go on high risk calls and the dog is usually the first one in the building, so you never know what type of weapon or person may be inside, so it's good to know a little bit of extra protection."

Officer Brian Rinder said Rex is a great partner whose presence often keeps people from being confrontational.
