First Valley Gottschalks To Say 'Good-bye'

Fresno, CA Gottschalks at Manchester mall was only open for four hours Sunday. Hundreds passed through the doors one last time looking for bargains and a chance to say good-bye to this retail legacy.

Time has run out for Gottschalks customers to take advantage of last minute sales at Manchester mall. This retail store is officially closed.

"It's like a part of Fresno is closing down," said Lynn Pieper of Fresno.

"I had to come by. It was the last day," said Adrianne Ortega of Fresno.

For parting employees it was a time to say 'good-bye' with style and a champagne toast outside the store!

"You see people come in and buy products but it's more than that. We really serve the community," said store manager Gina Vance.

Before the store closed Sunday shoppers took advantage of the going out of business specials. Clothing, rugs and fixtures rolled out the doors for next to nothing.

Nivahan Sangsida said: "It's $5 a piece. It's a steal, so take it.

Ortega said: "The pants normally run $40-50. I paid $5 for each pair."

There is close to $2,000 worth of furniture in the back of this truck. There is 16 chairs and 6 tables. With Sunday's 'Gotta Go Sale'' it only cost $80.

Some are using these incredible mark downs as a chance to start their own retail store.

Alberto Tomayo said: 'Gottschalks always bought good quality equipment and it will work out good for us."

Still, for many faithful customers and employees, Sunday marks the end for this Valley dynasty.

"And please take the heart of Gottschalks with you. i love you. Cheers," exclaimed Vance.

Gottschalks in Merced, Hanford and Oakhurst also closed their doors for good Sunday. The remaining Gottschalks will close sometime next month.
