Deadly Fresno Apartment Fire

Fresno, CA Thursday morning neighbors spotted smoke coming from this second floor room. "Then all of a sudden, I heard, "fire!" So I came outside and it was just barely white smoke," said neighbor Jay Eversole.

Neighbors tried to put the fire out with a hose and kicked down the door but by then, the smoke was too thick.

Firefighters arrived to find a woman dead inside.

Police officers evacuated part of the building but the damage to other units was minor. "This complex doesn't have a common attic so we didn't have any extension into the attic spread that way," said Fresno Fire Chief Randy Bruegman.

The fast response of firefighters also helped keep the flames from spreading.

But the Fresno City Fire Department is in the process re-assigning crews and trucks around the city as part of their redeployment plan in the face of budget cuts. In fact, one of the trucks that responded to Thursday's fire will no longer be in service within a few months.

At this time, fire investigators don't believe the cause of the fire is suspicious.
