Dispatchers got a call from 22nd and "Q" street at about 2:30 in the morning and the caller screamed that they needed a cop on the scene.
When police got there, Victor Jose Nanez was lying on the ground with stab wounds.
Investigators said Nanez followed his attacker to the area after they'd already had a fight at a party somewhere else in Merced.
Detectives are still talking to witnesses, trying to track down a suspect. It's Merced's third murder of the year.
