Smoke rose from the roofs of the homes even after firefighters got the flames mostly under control. They said a woman was trying to cook some French fries at home when the fire started and she couldn't stop it.
"She attempted to call 911, tried to locate an extinguisher to put out the fire herself. She was advised to get out. There were some other neighbors who attempted to help put the fire out, but it grew too quickly," said Fresno Fire Battalion Chief Jonathan Chew.
All three apartments in the building were destroyed, but one of them was empty. The Red Cross is trying to find temporary homes for the two families forced out.
