Downtown Fresno Fire Burns Historic Building

Fresno, CA The fire started shortly before 5 a.m. in an office inside the building which houses two businesses, Klein Financial and the Law Offices of Edward Chatoian. The building is located across the street from city hall.

When firefighters arrived they saw flames coming from one of the offices and the building's attic. It took crews about an hour to get a handle on the blaze.

"One office was burned pretty well and a bathroom, but fortunately for our firefighters, they were here pretty quickly, they were able to save most of the building," said Gary Eberhard with the Fresno Fire Department, "Like a lot of buildings in downtown Fresno, it is a historic building, built in 1926."

Traffic on nearby streets was blocked off for a short time as firefighters dealt with the smoke and flames. Fresno Street was reopened by the morning rush hour.

Fire investigators said the fire may have started in the building's flooring.
