The 23-year old Orosi woman is accused of abandoning three newborn babies between February 2005 and December 2006. The first two babies survived. An autopsy revealed the third newborn died from hypothermia.
Jurors heard an audio recording between a detective, Nancy Ortiz, and Ortiz's mother. The detective showed up to Ortiz's house to get a DNA sample to determine if she was the mother of all three children. But Ortiz wouldn't cooperate.
Ortiz is expected to take the witness stand in her defense next week.
