When Fresno firefighters arrived at the scene, the man was already out of the elevator. He said he was going up to the fourth floor when the elevator started filling up with smoke. That's when he says he started to get worried.
"I fix things. I know an electrical fire when I smell it. Toughed it out.. toughed it out but I'm starting to get nervous," said George Gricewich, "I forced the door open, took my shirt off. Get some skin on the door. Squeezed it open and pulled it with my hands and its praise Jesus, I'm on the floor."
The fire in the elevator shaft was quickly put out.
Firefighters were mopping up the building so people could get back to work late Monday morning.
The elevator fire happened at the same time as an apartment fire in Central Fresno. That fire on McKinley left 3 adults and one child without a home. The Red Cross is now helping them out.
