Delta Smelt Remains on the Brink of Extinction

According to the Sacramento Bee, a state fish and game report says the smelt's population this past summer fell back to an historic low set is 2005.

Federal restrictions turned off the delta pumps in hopes of reducing harm to the fish. But the latest data shows the cutbacks actually did little to help.

Central Valley farmers blame the federal ruling and another year of drought for being forced to fallow thousands of acres of farmland.
