The opening of these department stores will impact the valley in 2 ways, financially and emotionally. It's putting a lot people to work and giving others hope at a time when many jobs are still being eliminated.
Macy's hired hundreds of people in Visalia and Fresno to sell shoes, perfume, and cosmetics and a lot of these employees are former Gottschalk's workers.
The River Park store is just about 5 miles away from the Fashion Fair Macy's, but store managers promise a much difference experience at the new 2-story store.
"Lot of traffic, with the theater, the outdoor malls it has an environment that is different than a mall setting," said Macy's Store Manager Deena Cota.
Last Saturday, store managers of the new locations at River Park and the Visalia Mall held a one-day charity shopping event that benefitted shoppers and the community.
Customers got a sneak-peek at the new stores and bought $10-dollar tickets from dozens of charities around the valley. The tickets gave them special discounts and the money stayed in the community benefitting more than 20 charities.
