UPDATE: Officer Involved Shooting near the Fresno Fairgrounds

FRESNO, Calif. The latest incident ended in the overnight arrest of a robbery suspect, but not before he was shot by an officer.

The manhunt involving 40 officer, K9's and a helicopter ended 8 hours later in this neighborhood by the Fresno Fairgrounds. An entire square block area was on lockdown until the wounded suspect was found around 1 a.m. Thursday morning.

After a door-to-door search, officers found their suspect. 22-year-old Dedrick Mitchell was hiding out in an apartment, injured with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers said Mitchell tried to rob street vendor Graciano Rojas Wednesday evening.

Rojas said he was working this corner as usual when a man in a blue hooded sweatshirt approached him. He said the man demanded money and got aggressive.

A passerby called police. Officers were nearby and rushed to the scene. Rojas said officers chased the suspect down the street. He and neighbors heard gunshots.

"We heard like six, back to back," said witness Gaby Martinez.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said an officer chased, confronted, and then shot at the suspect. "When the officer fired the suspect had a knife in hand...in an area that had a lot of apartment complexes."

This latest officer-involved shooting happened the same day the city named its new independent police auditor.

Eddie Aubrey, a former Los Angeles Police Officer from Tacoma Washington, starts his new job November 30th.

Aubrey will review every use of force case within the Police Department, including the three recent officer involved shootings.

After being arrested, the Mitchell was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition. Mitchell is facing attempted armed robbery charges.
