O'Feilia Perez used a Spanish language translator to talk about her daughter Luevano and son Javier Castro. Perez called Luevano a great women, a great wife, a great mother and a great daughter.
Mejia became emotional at Friday's sentencing as the victims Brother-in-law Adam Raimer described the day they died.
Mejia used a revolver in a fit of rage to shoot and kill Luevano and Castro in August 2007. Defense Attorney Michael Aed said his client killed the two because Mejia thought his estranged wife was dating another man. Despite the tragedy, family members expressed forgiveness. Maria Castro is the victims' sister who said, "I forgive Moises for taking the lives of two amazing souls. I forgive him. I want Moises to be in prison the rest of his life not because I want him to suffer, but to take responsibly for what he did."
After hearing the emotional statements, Judge Gary Orozco sentenced Mejia to 50 years to life in prison. A punishment that will likely keep the man in custody until he dies.
Luevano left behind three girls. They are now living with Sandra's sister. None of Mejia's family members spoke at Friday's sentencing.
