Record Low Water Allocations Announced

FRESNO, Calif. The Department Of Water Resources announced an initial allocation of five-percent. It's the lowest allocation since the state water project began delivering water in 1967.

Growers are very concerned.

State water officials hope the low allocation announcement will spur communities to conserve. The numbers indicate a continued low water supply in reservoirs, but that could change if it turns into a wet winter.

Last year, there was an initial allocation of 15-percent, but ended the year with a 40-percent allocation.

Growers in western Fresno County expect they will have to pump more groundwater, buy water from other sources and perhaps leave more farmland bare.
