PG&E Claims Smart Meters are Accurate

FRESNO, Calif. PG&E purchased a full page ad in the Fresno Bee directly addressing customer concerns. Officials with the power company say it's an attempt to reach many customers who do not understand the Smart Meter program.

Last month, many people complained after smart meters were installed and electric bills doubled or even quadrupled.

The ad states the meters have been tested for accuracy. PG&E officials say Smart Meters were installed during the same time March rate increases went into effect.

"The reason customers saw a rate increase was not because we installed the smart meters but because of timing. It caused some confusion and what we're hoping to is clarify that a little bit," said PG&E Spokesperson Jeff Smith.

Last week The Public Utilities Commission agreed to hire an independent consultant to test the new digital meters.
