CHP escorts vehicles through I-5 affected by storm

LOS ANGELES (AP) The 30-mile stretch over the Grapevine in the Tehachapi Mountains was closed around 5:30 p.m. Monday after a cold, snowy storm made it treacherous on the main highway between Northern and Southern California.

Hundreds of truckers and commuters spent the night in their cars or in the small town of Castaic north of Los Angeles.

Officer Jennifer Connolly says the CHP began escorting 500 to 800 vehicles at a time through the Tejon Pass at around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
