Police believe the wet road conditions were part of the reason the car slammed into the gas pump, causing it to explode. The driver did manage to free himself from his car after the crash.
Investigators credit the gas station owner with quick thinking when flames started to erupt from the pump. "The owner of the gas station turned off the pumps immediately which is the smartest thing to do. Fire Department and Police Department were out here immediately so there was no further danger," said Lt. Joe Gomez with the Fresno Police Dept.
The driver of the car suffered moderate injuries with cuts to his upper body. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center.
Police do not know if alcohol was involved. No one else was hurt.
