The train hit him as it went through the railroad crossing at McKinley and Blackstone in Central Fresno, just before 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters say the 45-year-old man was collecting cans along the tracks when the train came through. It knocked over his shopping cart and left his belongings all over the place.
A witness says the victim was just too close to the tracks to get out of the way, even with a good warning.
The man suffered traumatic injuries, but he was conscious and talking to emergency medical technicians on the way to the hospital.
