Embassies in Yemen Shut Down

January 3, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
The United States and Britain have shut down their embassies in Yemen because of threats from al-Qaeda.

In a statement posted on its website overnight, the U.S. Embassy in Yemen is now urging all U.S. citizens in the country to be "vigilant and aware of security."

The specific threat or threats against the embassies, or Americans in Yemen aren't known at this time.

The closure of the U.S. embassy in Yemen comes one day after President Obama directly blamed an al-Qaeda cell based in Yemen, for the botched bombing of a Christmas Day flight bound for Detroit.

There is no word on when the embassies will reopen.
