Passerby Credited in Capture of Armed Robber

FRESNO, Calif. Police said Jesse Garcia robbed an 85-year-old Fresno Woman at gun point looking for $20 or $30 dollars. It happened at the Save Mart on Blackstone and Clinton on Thursday.

Police said Garcia grabbed a recyclable grocery bag that was wrapped around the victim's arm which contained her purse. When she resisted he forced her to the ground where she received minor scratches.

Garcia was shot in the shoulder by police a block away-- that bullet is now lodged in his spine and he faces permanent paralysis.

Officers said a passerby in a red truck helped catch the suspect. The citizen called in Garcia's location and pointed him out to police after he changed his clothes in disguise.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said, "If that had not occurred there is a high likelyhood that this suspect would have gotten away the suspect would have committed serious acts in the future maybe injured or killed someone."

Garcia is currently in custody at Community Regional Medical Center charged with armed robbery, and probation violation.

Officers are now asking that good Samaritan in the red truck to contact the Fresno Police Department.
