Fresno Police say Officer Mike Roberts was westbound when a car turned in front of him from Bullard onto Fruit.

Roberts propelled over the handlebars of the BMW motorcycle, all while the right side of his leg was burning after fuel spewed into the air. The bike he was riding burst into flames.

Andy Hall with the Fresno Police Department said, "The vehicle ignited upon impact. Fuel was thrown everywhere inside the vehicle he hit, on him, his clothes were drenched with gasoline and the motorcycle was engulfed. When he was flying over the vehicle he hit, he was more than likely on fire."

The twelve year veteran of the police department suffered second and third degree burns on the right side of his leg, broken ribs, a bruised lung, a compound fractured elbow and a concussion.

Investigators believe the officer was not at fault. He's now at Community Regional Medical Center in stable condition. The police chief expects Roberts to be in the hospital for a prolonged period as he undergoes skin grafting.
