Merced is stepping up its campaign to bring Google Fiber to the area. Wednesday leaders from various agencies across the county gathered at the Castle Commerce Center in Atwater. They're working on the final details to convince Google that Merced is the best place to test its ultra high speed internet.
Organizers are also asking residents to gather at the Merced College football field on Saturday to form a "human billboard" spelling out Google's name that will be photographed from the air.
Anyone interested in being part of the human billboard can go to the Merced College track Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Organizers are hoping more than 300 people will take part.
FRESNO FIBER INFORMATION
Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin is jumping on board a campaign to try and bring Google's ultra high speed internet service to the city.
The "Google Fiber" network would deliver the internet at speeds 100 times faster than current high speed systems. 200 cities have entered the competition and Fresno is asking for the public's help in raising support.
The mayor says Google Fiber will benefit everyone who needs the service for their business and for their homes.
"We think Fresno is the best location. Fresno is a great test market, with an isolated media market; we've got terrific anchor institutions and great cooperation with the schools," said Swearengin.
