The gray whale that had been swimming around Dana Point Harbor since Monday has died. The 35-foot whale washed up on the beach, according to the Ocean Institute in Dana Point.

On Wednesday, a team of marine mammal experts removed about 20 pounds of fishing nets and ropes from its tail. She then darted out to sea, presumably to resume its migration north to Alaska.

But the whale, nicknamed Lily, returned to the Harbor on Thursday morning.

No word yet on what ultimately caused her death.
