California demonstrators protest whaling

SAN DIEGO The demonstration Sunday was part of a coordinated protest in Santa Monica and other coastal communities in California calling on the International Whaling Commission not to remove the current moratorium on whaling.

Protestors gathered signatures on a petition asking President Barack Obama to direct the U.S. delegation to the IWC to support the continuation of the ban.

The plan before the IWC, made up of 88 governments, would give quotas to Japan, Norway and Iceland, the countries currently most involved in catching whales.
