Merced County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 35-year-old Daniel Melo on murder charges Thursday morning.
Detectives say Melo called to report that Agaton Gumanday had been shot to death Wednesday night.
The 26-year-old died on the edge of an almond orchard near Snelling where relatives have now placed a cross.
The mother of Gumanday's two children and unborn son says the two men were like brothers. She's still in shock over the shooting.
Jessica Freeman said, "Father's Day is coming up again, but we're not going to have him here this time. I don't know what I'm going to do ... I don't know how I'm going to get past this."
Investigators have not released a motive for the shooting.
Gumanday's family has set up a memorial account at the Wells Fargo Bank in Atwater.
