Former Fresno State golfer is now a fan favorite

Fresno, CA

The 2-time PGA tour winner is back in California this week competing in the US open at Pebble Beech where a large gallery of fans seems never too far away from his every swing.

Since an All-American career at Fresno State Nick Watney has risen from obscurity to believe it or not a fan favorite on tour.

"Working these leader boards the last couple of days I've heard his name mentioned. 'Where's nick where's nick,"' Chuck Bandelian said.

Certainly, no one will ever confuse Watney's popularity level with that of some of golf's biggest stars. But the former Fresno State standout has experienced quite a following in his short time on tour.

"I hear a lot of bulldog chants out there."

Earlier this week at Pebble Beach, we saw firsthand as dozens waited in line just meet the 29-year-old and get his autograph.

"I have to say it's pretty cool to get noticed. It's a bit surreal to be honest, I need to continue to play well," Nick Watney said.

And with the U.S. Open being played in his own backyard, this week at Pebble Beach the Sacramento native says just competing is a dream come true.

Whether it's his quiet demeanor or regular-guy type personality that endures him to golf fans, Nick Watney says he's just enjoying life as a professional golf.

"It's great this is what I've wanted to do for a really long time. I get to play golf for my living," Watney said.
