Pot growing bust along the San Joaquin River

MERCED COUNTY, Calif.

Sheriff investigators from Merced and Madera counties found more than 9,000 pot plants in Stevinson. The officers had to use boats to reach the island.

Officers estimate it could have been worth more than $9-million dollars. It took officers 13-hours to destroy the plants.

No suspects were arrested, but officers found a makeshift camp on the island where the growers lived while maintaining the crop.

Investigators say the growing operation may be tied to drug cartels out of Mexico.
