Best and worst summer foods

FRESNO, Calif.

It's easy to take a vacation from healthy eating when summer is in full swing. So when it comes to a family picnic which would you pick, a cheese-burger or a hotdog? "Cheeseburger because it's got some calcium in it and it's real meat." A cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, ketchup and mustard will cost you 600 calories and 28 grams of fat. Compare that to a hotdog: 270 calories and 12 grams of fat.

Now for a picnic favorite.

"There's a lot of carbs in potato salad."

"Macaroni salad, it just feels likes its cooler to eat."

"Potato salad because there's vitamin C in potatoes."

Potato salad has 220 calories and 12 grams of fat. Macaroni salad: 170 calories and 7 grams of fat. Baked beans are your best bet at only 150 calories and 2 grams of fat.

Here's a tough one: do you pick veggies with ranch dip or chips and guacamole?

"There's fat in the chips and fat in the ranch, no, so it's got to be chips."

"Ranch is fattening."

"No, no fat in the veggies, veggies with ranch, no fat in the veggies."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE THE HEALTHIER CHOICE IS THIS ONE --WITH LESS CALORIES AND FAT?

"What kind of ice cream do you want?"

If you're screaming for ice cream, remember this: Baskin-Robbins Oreo Outrageous Sundae packs 1,130 calories - and 55 grams of fat. Instead, grab two scoops of Oreo Cookies And Cream in a cake cone, which has 365 calories. Some smart and tasty choices for summer that won't let your diet fail by fall.
