It happened around 5:30 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Peach and Clay in East Central Fresno.
"It was disbelief. It was surreal," said Robert Locke as he described the scene outside this East Central Fresno apartment complex Sunday.
Locke was walking out to his car early Sunday morning, when he saw a man lying dead in the middle of the street. Police say he was the victim of a hit and run accident. "As I look over here, I notice the man's shoes are lying over here in the street and the officer said he must have been hit at 50 to 60 miles per hour."
The coroner's office identified the man as 23-year-old Sergio Cifuentes Perez of Fresno. Investigators say Perez was walking northbound when the vehicle hit him and took off.
The crash happened just after 5 a.m. at a time when police say there were very few people in the area.
"Early morning hours, um, we have literally have nothing to go on and we're hoping that there was maybe somebody driving by, saw a subject in the roadway prior to this. Uh, maybe saw a vehicle in the area," said Lt. Don Gross with the Fresno Police Department.
Andréa Cortez lives on the corner near where the accident occurred. She was sleeping at the time, and says she didn't hear a thing.
"Does it surprise you someone was hit and killed here?"
"No. I'm not surprised at all. It's always a busy street and people are always crossing and j-walking here, so it doesn't faze me at all."
Fresno Police say with very little information to go on, their investigation is hindered. Their only hope now is that someone comes forward.
"We have some sketchy information. We're not sure if that will be related or not, so we really are looking for the community's input."
At this point, investigators do not have a vehicle description. If you have any information about this hit and run crash, you are urged to call the Fresno Police Department.
