Battling child exploitation in the Central Valley

FRESNO, Calif.

Representatives from the Fresno, Clovis, and Merced police departments joined federal prosecutors in Downtown Fresno.

The agencies will begin using a new online system that allows for more collaboration, and helps them setup undercover operations and share information among agencies.

For three straight years, authorities say the Central Valley has led the nation in the number of child exploitation indictments.

Just this year the Fresno division has obtained indictments against 23 people for charges ranging from child pornography to child sex tourism.

Sgt. Matt McFadden said, "Child Pornography, we try to wrap our normal minds around that to understand what it is and we can't because we are trying to use a normal mind about it. These images are a lot more horrible, a lot more horrific that you can even imagine."

Part of the new strategy also includes better educating the public and particularly parents about the dangers that can be associated with the internet.
