Report reveals how Americans use their cell phones

FRESNO, Calif.

For example, people in Gulf Coast states are among those who talk the most on their phones with an average of 800-minutes per month. Compare that to Iowa and Wyoming where the average cell phone user only talks for about 600-minutes per month.

But when it comes to texting, it's the age of the user that is the most important.

"No surprise to anybody who has teenagers at home, texting is extremely popular with that age group," said Jonathan Carson with The Nielsen Company.

Teens average 2,700 texts a month. That's about 8 texts for every hour they are awake.
