Fresno will soon need a new fire chief

FRESNO, Calif.

Action News has learned Chief Bruegman met with Anaheim councilmembers earlier this week.

On Tuesday Anaheim's city manager will ask those leaders to consider him as their new chief.

Bruegman was out of town Friday and was not available for comment but those close to the 20-year veteran say he has been looking to leave Fresno for the last year and a half.

He recently applied for a job as chief in Houston and Huntington Beach.

Since 2003 he has been instrumental in reducing response times to emergency calls, increasing staff and purchasing new modern equipment.

Firefighters, union representatives and Fresno mayor all say Bruegman will be missed.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of what Bruegman will see if he takes this job.

As you can see Anaheim has a population of more than 350,000 compared to Fresno's larger population.

Bruegman will be in charge of fewer personnel. But he will have a bigger budget to work with than Fresno.

Bruegman's last day is October 1.

An interim chief will be appointed by then by the city manager and then the search will begin to replace Bruegman.
