When firefighters arrived on the scene they found one person outside the building who managed to escape. An ambulance ended up taking that person to the hospital for unknown injuries.
The Fresno Fire Department says the fire posed a difficult challenge.
"On arrival we had smoke and flames shooting from the rear of the building. It appeared the fire was well involved. Our first arriving crews that arrived within two minutes did an outstanding job knocking down the fire and keeping it controlled to the area of origin," said Michael Alforque with the Fresno Fire Department.
The fire destroyed the garage apartment and everything inside. The fire department estimates the total loss to be around $100,000.
