Food Giveaway at Fresno Fairgrounds feeds more than 25,000

FRESNO, Calif.

The drive through distribution was held near the Big Fresno Fairgrounds, at Mosqueda Park, while those who don't have cars lined up along the fence, bringing grocery carts and strollers.

The food given away Saturday was enough to feed more than 25,000 people and was made possible through the governor's office, with food that had been set aside for drought assistance.

One family drove all the way from Los Angeles to pick up food. They arrived at 4:30 Saturday morning.

"In the next 20 minutes, they just kept on coming," Kyro Williams said.

"I'm appreciative of this, very appreciative," Jane Lara of Fresno said. "There's times when you don't got for the kids in the morning, breakfast."

Organizers say Saturday's turnout is a reminder of the great need in the Central Valley.

The giveaway wrapped up three hours early, with 150 vehicles still in line. The giveaway was also part of the Sept. 11 National Day of Service.

More than 600 volunteers showed up to help distribute the food.
