Fresno Police say the unidentified officer spotted 25-year-old Hector Orozco riding a bicycle near Cedar and Olive just after 2 a.m. Friday morning.

The officer says he tried to stop him but says Orozco Pedalled off to the front of the La Costa apartment complex at Cedar and Home. Orozco ran into the bushes -- when the officer said he looked like he was reaching for a weapon. That's when the officer shot Orozco.

"What we did find next to the suspect was an open buck knife. Some type of knife that we're assuming the suspect had in his possession," said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

Orozco was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was released about three hours later.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says Orozco is a Bulldog gang member and was released from parole last week. There is no word on what charges he faces.

The officer is a five year veteran of the department. He's on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
