According to the divorce papers, the couple cited irreconcilable differences. The papers were filed in Tennessee on Wednesday.
They have been married for 17 years and have five children.
"As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family. We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers," the couple said in a statement.
The two began dating in 1991 and married two years later at his home near Nashville, Tennessee.
The country singer was previously married to Cindy Smith, a sales representative. They divorced in 1991.
