Fresno Police officer injured in crash with another vehicle

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno Police say the officer was responding to a different call when the crash occurred.

A police cruiser and a dark colored sedan both sit smashed next to this light pole in downtown Fresno Tuesday night.

"We we're just outside and all of a sudden we see this cop car just like speeding super fast with his lights on. And two seconds later we hear this big crash." said Staicia Southern.

Carl Geissert saw the crash right in front of him.

"There was another car that had a green light that was coming through and they didn't see the officer. He didn't have his siren on, he just kind of flashed it before going through. And he hit right into the side of the other car." said Geissert.

Emergency crews rushed to pull the officer out of his cruiser and into an ambulance where he was transported to Community Regional Medical Center.

Geeisert says three or four people were inside the other car. "They didn't seem to be injured too badly. They were at least able to walk and were coherent." added Geissert.

The driver of the other car underwent a sobriety test at the scene for drugs or alcohol. Officers put him in handcuffs and placed him in the back of a squad car.

"Right now we're still ascertaining that information. I know that the driver of the vehicle volunteered to go to the hospital to have his blood drawn. To determine the actual, validity of the, if there was any type of substance in his system." said Lt. Phil Cooley

Investigators say the driver's blood tests are still pending. We're told the officer is expected to be ok and should be released from the hospital before by the end of the night.
