Robbery suspect caught after wild chase in Clovis

FRESNO, Calif.

Investigators now say 48-year-old Scott Wheeler carried out multiple business robberies in Fresno and Clovis. And his crime spree even extends beyond California.

Clovis Police say the suspect robbed the same check into cash business twice. The first time he got away without a hitch, but this time an alert manager followed him out and trailed him until police could catch up. This is the mask and replica gun Clovis Police say the suspect used when he robbed a Clovis check into cash store Thursday afternoon.

Officers say the store manager stepped right into action, when her store was hit a second time by the same man.

"What the manager had done was get in her car and actually follow the suspect calling police, letting us know where he was. Now he was heading into Fresno at which time was alerted Fresno Police. Eagle 1 was instrumental in helping us," Janet Stoll-Lee with the Clovis Police Department said.

Once the sheriff's helicopter pegged the suspect, officers followed nearby until he crashed his blue Mazda at Palm and Nees. The suspect hit a woman driving a gold coupe then took off on foot. The scene got chaotic.

"We did have one of our police cars actually clip one of our officers who was hopping out of the car to go after the suspect and then we had a patrol car also go after the suspect who was running behind the buildings there and he was bumped by one of the cars."

Clovis officers believe Wheeler is also responsible for the December 7 robbery of this convenience store in Downtown Clovis off of Clovis and 2nd.

Until Thursday, the big hang up had always been getting a good description of the suspect. He generally wore dark hoodies and masks during the hold ups.

Investigators say Wheeler is responsible for a least a handful of local robberies and at least one in the state of Nevada.

The Clovis officer who was injured is recovering from a broken foot.

Wheeler is in the Fresno County Jail facing numerous felony charges and more could be added.
