Officer shoots carjacking suspect in Northeast Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened after midnight Wednesday morning at First and Shaw in Northeast Fresno.

Officers thought they were stopping a drunk driver at Highway 41 near Shaw, but when they ran the plates, they learned the car was stolen in a carjacking. The driver then took off and went through the Fashion Fair mall parking lot.

Police say the passenger tried to run but was caught. Officers say the driver tried to jump the median fence at First Street.

Police say they saw the man reach for his waist and thought he had a weapon so they shot him in the leg. He was taken to the hospital.
